The Round system explained in simple terms.
We apply to a central system at a set date every year. The system is called ORIEL.
Usually, if the programme in question is the uncoupled variant, you do a core training programe for 2 to 3 years first, which could be surgical or medical. After this core training then they apply for a specialist training, designated with "ST".
So the designation looks like this.
CT1 CT2 CT3 - ST4 ST5 ST6 ST7.
There are some run-through programmes however where you begin at ST level.
Such people begin from ST1 ST2 ST3 ST4 ST5 ST6 ST7 ST 8.
I hope we now understand the round system of applications and the ST and CT terminologies.
We apply to a central system at a set date every year. The system is called ORIEL.
At that set date they recieve the first round of applications for specialty. Because of the RLMT explained prior, they would only collect applications from UK citizens and european citizens.
Because it is a centralized system, All available slots for residency are known at a particular time. And residency slots with high competition ratio and fill ratio would have been filled up already by UK/EU applicants during the first round of applications
The remaining residency slots across all specialties would now be re-advertised for the a re-round of applications. This is what is termed the 2nd round.
This is where IMGs like us can apply. IMG as in international medical graduate as in Nigerians.
This is the general idea behing the round system. The 1st and the 2nd round.

The registrars have designations based on year and type of programme. So when you're in the residency programme you would have a designation.

ReplyDeleteWhat is Uncoupled variant
ReplyDeleteI think it means that after core training, you apply again to continue in ST unlike the run through
