‘Some ladies have adopted nudity as their modus operandi yet blame men for objectifying women’
I’ll tackle
this topic in a rather interesting way. First, I would acknowledge the two
truths and then bridge them together in a rather unpleasant way.
Women and Nudity.
It is undeniable
that the world has changed. Back in the day women were seen to wear layers and
layers of clothing material. This is exemplified remarkably with how the renaissance
women dressed. From the bodice to the bum-roll, to the busk, to the chemise,
and etcetera.
But as time
progressed the clothing got tighter, lighter and more body-hugging, it also began to reveal
more and more skin, and while in the past there was no social media, now, one
could sit in the comfort of her bed and see numerous seemingly attractive styles
with varying degree of exposure.
That is the
trend, and it has come to stay and we must learn to embrace that rather than
verbally chastise the act wish they’d go back to how things were when Napoleon still existed.
Barring the obvious dissatisfaction with religious and cultural beliefs, this is the new truth.
Men objectifying
women.
Stealing a
pitch from the Wikipedia, sexual objectification is defined as the act of treating
a person solely as an object of sexual desire. It has been arguably said to be
dehumanizing. At this point it is important to note that sexual objectification
actually goes both ways. But that’s for another day.
There’s no
sugar coating this, objectifying a human being is bad. No one deserves to be
seen as an instrument of pleasure, yet why does this happen?
Sex is
primal, it’s the joy and the bane of human existence. At some point most people
crave sex like it’s the only and most effective way to rid them of carnal tensions, and as such they tend to see the
opposite gender as a tool for carnal knowledge.
Admittedly,
this is more common with men as against women. Men who have placed so much importance
on sex will continually see women, fully clothed or not as an instrument with which
they can use to quell their sexual desires. An act with which we have said, is
condemnable.
Are the two
concepts Interwoven?
If we lived
in a parallel world, perhaps we would say that women embracing nudity is mutually
exclusive from men objectifying women, but sadly it isn’t, and we must understand this reality. The two topics are often mixed together in the same distasteful broth.
Visual
stimulus, is the key.
Men are
visual creatures, and they are excited by what they see. The visual stimulus translates
into some form of sexual energy which seeks to be released by whatever means necessary.
It is almost primal. For animals it’s the scent of the female in ‘heat’ that
drives the males crazy, builds up that sexual energy which they must release,
and sometimes they even battle to the death for mating rights. But humans are not
as primal as that, and as opposed to the characteristic scent the female animals emit, it is what men see that builds up that energy, and
ultimately drives the objectification of women.
Visual stimulus
is dependent on the century.
Back in the
renaissance period, the perception of ‘sexy’ was quite different from now. Back
then the sexual energy derived from the visual stimulus was highest when the women
were plump, well fed and had a nice torso to fit the corset.
As the
standards of beauty change over the century, such does the trigger.
Conclusion.
Because it’s primal and instinctive and seemingly in-built doesn’t make it right. The woman has the right to dress however she want, naked or not and she has the right to complain if she feels objectified. The man must take responsibility and control his mind to see that there’s more than just sex.
Nakedness and exposure of more
skin may cause him to see the woman as an instrument of sex, but he is
no gorilla. He has a thinking faculty and a super-ego that must be able to
quell the urges to allow a rational acceptable man come to life. The argument
must change from ‘women cannot keep dressing nude and not expect men to objectify
them’ to ‘women can wear whatever they want, and the man must control his mind’
Finale.
There would
always be men with whom they think with their genitals and not the mind, and
such men will continually objectify women. And as long as such men continually draw breath, be
it this century or the next, the debate of objectifying women may persist. However
sad it seems.
This is a really beautiful read. And I agree with you. Sadly objectifying women will not end anytime soon.
